Pour tous ceux qui m'ont fait l'amitié de lire l'histoire de Serge, je viens de recevoir un courrier qui éclaire complètement un épisode de l'histoire.
Cela montre à quel point la coopération des amateurs de généalogie peut être utile. Elna a été alerté la semaine dernière par la signature de mes courriers.

Vera VanWegen était une jeune femme de 20 ans quand elle a écrit la lettre.
Elle enseignait à l'ecole régionale de Middle branch. (c'était une petite école - environ 25 élèves - située au milieu des fermes avec des élèves du jardin d'enfant jusqu'au 8ème grade (de 5-13 ans).
Elle parle dans la lettre des diplômes qu'elle doit passer pendant l'été pour pouvoir enseigner une autre année.
Elle répond à la lettre de quelqu'un (sans doute Serge) qui lui a écrit comme un correspondant. Je pense qu'il s'agit de Serge car elle lui demande comment se prononce son nom. Nicolas n'aurait pas semblé difficile à un américain, mais il n'y a aucun équivallent proche de Serge.
Elga Robinson, la personne qu'elle mentionne dans sa lettre, était probablement leur relation.
Il était à la guerre et a été envoyé à Brest en Juillet 1918 comme wagonnier dans le 105ème régiment qui était une unité du train.
Elga a été démobilisé en Avril 1919.
La famille d'Elga n'est pas resté dans la région, mais quelques uns des enfants et des petits enfants de Vera y vivent encore.
Je n'ai trouvé personne qui ai jamais entendu parler de Serge, aussi il est probable que c'est la seule lettre qu'elle lui ai jamais écrit.
Il a été intéressant de lire une lettre si ancienne au sujet de notre région.
J'en donnerai une copie à la famille et j'en mettrais une dans les archives de généralogie de notre bibliothèque. Je ne pense pas que vous trouverez plus d'informations ici, mais des choses inhabituelles se produisent parfois.
Il y a des microfilms qui donnent le nom de tous ceux qui ont immigré aux Etats Unis. Vous devriez pouvoir y trouver Serge, s'il est venu ici.

Vera VanWegen was a young woman of 20 when she wrote the letter. She was teaching country school in Middle Branch.
(That was a small school (about 25 students) located among the farms with students from Kindergarten to 8th grade (ages 5-13)
She tells in the letter about the classes she must take in the summer to be able to teach another year.
She is responding to a letter from someone (Serge, I believe) who had written to her as a pen pal.
I believe it was Serge because she asks them to mark how to pronounce the name. Nicholas would not have seemed difficult to an American, but there is no near equivalent to Serge.
Elga Robinson, the person she mentions in the letter, was probably the connection between them.
He was in the war and was sent to Brest in July 1918 as a wagoner in the 105th Regiment which was a supply unit. Elga was discharged in April 1919.
Elga's family did not stay in this area, but some of Vera's children and grandchildren still live here.
I have not found anyone who ever heard about Serge, so this is probably the only letter she ever wrote him.
It has been interesting to read about our county so long ago from the letter.
I will give a copy to family members and place one in the genealogy archives at our library. I do not think you will find more information here, but unusual things do happen.
There are microfilms that tell the names of all immigrants who came to the United States. You would be able to find Serge there, if he did come here.

I will try to find some information about Vera and also Elga Robinson who is mentioned in the letter. Perhaps that will give you a clue as to how they knew your ancestor.
I have forgotten nearly all the French I used to know, but I think I understand the basic information. Do you know if your ancestor was ever in Michigan?
